I have the "me against the world" feeling when I'm doing my 12 km runs through the city at 5:00 am. Best way to start my day. And people find it weird that I go to bed at 8 pm :)
I've been working quietly, learning new things I had no idea about, putting them to practice and reliving the life of a learner once again at an age where I've more experience than most. People, family and friends included, have no idea what I do all day and I don't mind it. Progress is slow but where's the fire?
Definitely been blinded by the idea that past achievements are what people care about. You're right, people really care about what you do now. Not yesterday.
You CAN use what you have done before as a source of credibility but you only need to do it once and you need to do it quickly and move on. You tell people, they get it, they don't need or want to hear it again. I have a friend who continuously talks about what he did 30 years ago, like again and again and again, and you can see clients' eyes glazing over rapidly. It loses him business.
Finally, if you're reading this note, I'm in Tim's Fearless Money Makers and I give it my highest recommendation. Email Tim back and get the info on it at least, if you are interested. I don't get anything for saying this, I am just passing on my experience that it is valuable.
Excellent advice for a recovering people pleaser & chronic oversharer. Not all have your best interests at heart and talking about your plans often gives folks the chance to deflate your drive even before getting started. Silence really is golden.
Every experience in life is valuable if you know how to use it, of course talking about the past is boring.
There will always be obstacles, but fate has its own way of taking you where it wants to go, if you know your path and walk on it – regardless of the pain, problems, challenges or ridicule you may encounter.
Tim, the Substack algo reliably serves up your content always first. I’m not sure what I did for that to happen. The need for validation — take the other side of that as a thought starter — how much of the world’s progress was driven by that? And how much of it has it driven destruction? Finding that perfect intersection of “ego” vs “serving humanity” eventually becomes if forged correctly into a full understanding that “this is my unique calling contribution” to this world. At least that’s the journey I myself have been on.
Yes, it pays to keep your activities and your successes, no matter how minute or unimportant, to yourself. You would be surprised how many people will try to put you down or to say that you were trying to become important or were loudly voicing their opinion that you are fairly unimportant, untalented and even overrated! Keep your doings to yourself but even that doesn’t work when someone is virtually screaming at you about going to university having made you think yourself superior to those who haven’t had, haven’t done or haven’t been supported as you have. Me, listening in amazement and recalling leaving school at sixteen and going to work .

From what I have experienced, you nailed it. Thanks for writing it down!

I've had a "chip on my shoulder" my entire life, and it's worked out pretty well.

Hi, how do you balance the tension between execute in silence and quiet self promotion / self promotion is critical from your other article?
