How I Made $1M Writing Online in a Few Short Years
This article is the exact opposite of what you think
I’ve made over $1m in writing royalties, reached 500m+ people, built a 7 figure academy off the back of writing, and met my heroes like Tony Robbins and Gary Vee.
Every day I get emails from people asking me some version of how I did this so they can do it too. Here’s my blanket response.
1. Focus on content distribution
Great writing is useless if nobody reads it.
And social-proof helps even average writing appear better than it is so it outperforms. Use social media platforms to help your writing find more eyeballs.
Write where people are, not where you think they are.
2. Do newsletter recommendation swaps
The way to make money online is with an email list. Find people who have email lists and get them to recommend yours in return for you doing the same.
If you have no email list, then buy some low-cost ads in similar newsletters to advertise your own. Now you don’t need to rely on social media as much.
3. Lose $1.2m
Start writing online. Join a new platform that pays writers. Do really well. Have multiple viral hits. Have people tell you that you’re their hero.
Find a woman. Marry her. Talk about having kids. Begin to save the money you make from writing to use it to start a family. Invest a big chunk of it into Bitcoin and Ethereum. Have the markets go crazy-high.
See that small investment balloon to 7 figures.
Start being a smartass. Flaunt your cash. Let your ego become so big that your head can’t fit through the front door of your apartment. Start talking to your wife about buying her dream house. Have her pick the color of the wallpaper.
Talk about which bedroom is going to be the nursery. See her smile so big it makes your heart beat a little faster. Keep writing away and stacking cash. See the markets continue to go high. Keep telling people how much money you make.
One night, come home, turn on the computer, and sit down. Buy a new crypto that Marvel Comics has said they will use. Get $1000 worth. Attempt to send it to your digital wallet. Have the money disappear.
Become entitled. Get angry over $1000 instead of being grateful for the $1m+ you have. Attempt to recover the funds. Try a bunch of tech hacks you don’t really understand. Leave your computer on and go to bed.
Try to sleep but feel as though something is off. Ignore it. Fall asleep exhausted.
Wake up the next morning at 7 AM. Turn on your computer while sipping a Nescafe Decaf coffee with soy milk. Open your digital wallet. See $1.2m withdrawn from your account. Have your heart sink to the floor.
Panic-call your best friend who works for a well-known crypto company. Have him investigate. Get a call back 30 minutes later with the news. Your money is gone forever and went to Russian cybercriminals.
Pretend to be okay. Hold back the tears.
Now go into the living room and tell your wife that most of the life savings are gone. Have her not be angry. Feel relieved. Go back to your office. Sit next to the computer in complete silence. Feel like an idiot. Feel like a fraud.
Post the story on Reddit under an anonymous username. Check back 21 minutes later and see the comments ripping you apart, telling you some version of “you’re an idiot.”
Hear a knock at the door. Have your best friend show up at your doorstep. Go to coffee with him. Sit down. Answer his question: “How do you feel?” Tell him you’re fine. Try to be manly. Then burst into tears in front of 50 coffee drinkers.
Feel even more stupid. Ask the waiter for a tissue. Pretend you’re okay. Get a hug from your best friend. Say something stupid like “Now I know how people walk in front of trains.” Be horrified with your comment.
Walk home in silence. Try to process the loss. Start to think about how you won’t be able to pay for your future baby’s needs. Think about how hard it’s going to be to make that money writing again. Think about your wife divorcing you because you can’t pay the bills anymore. Think about the fancy dinners that will have to stop.
Feel even more stupid. Cry some more.
Think about what your parents would think if they found out you invested in such a risky investment like crypto. Imagine them yelling at you. Imagine yourself never wanting to speak to them again because of it, and cutting them off.
Wake up the next day. Feel a little better. Watch some inspirational videos. See Tony Robbins speak. Think about what matters. Write down a list of things you’re grateful for. Then have a huge aha-moment.
If I can make a million dollars writing, I can do it again. Realize the skills you’ve learned can’t be taken away, and only the money is missing. Have another big breakthrough.
I had to lose $1.2m in order to make $10m+.
Immediately email both thoughts to your business partner in America. Have him support you. Have him understand. Have him be blown away by the short turnaround from adversity to euphoria.
Get back to the writing. Use flow states. Remember why you write it in the first place – to help people. Keep writing. Be even more driven than before. Join a new platform. Tell a few close friends about the loss. See email subscribers trickling in every day.
Be happy to be alive. Keep persisting for the next year. Check the bank balance. Realize you’ve now made more money from writing than the $1.2m you lost.
Losing money and taking risks creates the best learning. Money can be taken away but the mindset and skills can’t.
4. Have a baby
Kids are cute. They give us a reason to write and make money.
Whenever we feel down we can look at their photo and instantly have them break a negative thought pattern. Kids provide stories and lessons too.
In a way, we’re all big kids living in this big world trying to figure out why the human experience is full of so much tragedy. Suffering IS the way.
Before you go...
There's been a lot of drama going down on Twitter... or... X, as its supposed to be called now?
But, there's also a lot of opportunities to be had.
What are your honest thoughts about Twitter?
Years ago I was fired as CEO of a startup. I cried as I drove out of the parking lot, alone. I called my husband, who was out of town, and he told me they couldn't take away who I was. I drove to Costco, bought a new computer, came home and started putting together a plan for my own business. It was a humbling experience that turned into a grand adventure, a successful consulting/training company and the opportunity to make a difference. I wouldn't change what happened, even if I could.
Thanks for sharing your story, Tim. I bet your wife is a saint and your little girl a true blessing.
Thanks for being so real, allowing yourself to be vulnerable. Everyone fucks up and sometimes the fuck up is huge and spectacular. 😉The way you decided have gratitude for the small wins and move past feeling sorry for yourself, get up the next day and start working to turn things around. Just WOW!! Working through a real low point in my life right now and this helps so I can keep getting up each day and turn the tides on things so as not to go under. It helps to remind me that things can get better. You just have to keep working at it. It lets us know it’s okay show up as messy and flawed sometimes. You are an inspiration. And it’s real inspiration with all the imperfection and struggles that come with being a human and not some phony glossy instagram life that is illusion. Thank you.
